The University of New Brunswick is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Professor Rick Wightman, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer on May 9, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. His life was marked by a remarkable dedication to education, a passion for community engagement, and an infectious zest for life.
Born in Durham, England, Rick Wightman was born to Bob and Nancy (Clement) Wightman on December 27, 1962. He later moved to Canada, where he pursued his academic interests at UNB, earning both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Forestry. His academic background laid the foundation for a distinguished career that would see him become a vital part of the university’s Faculty of Computer Science.
Joining UNB at the dawn of the new millennium, Rick Wightman quickly established himself as a passionate educator and a dedicated contributor to university initiatives. His leadership roles included serving as Director of Cooperative Education, Information Systems Coordinator, and head of the Recruitment Committee. His current role on the Innovations and Industry Committee reflected his commitment to strengthening ties between academia and industry, ensuring students received relevant, real-world experience.
Colleagues and students remember Rick as much more than a teacher—he was a mentor, a friend, and a source of inspiration. Known for his approachable demeanor, sense of humor, and unwavering support, Rick fostered a welcoming environment that encouraged curiosity and innovation. His enthusiasm for computer science and his genuine care for the well-being of those around him made him a cherished figure in the university community.
Rick leaves behind his wife, Lori (Hay) Wightman, and his three children, Jerry, Jake, and Dylan Wightman. His sister, Wendy (Gord) Connell, also mourns his loss. His family and friends are united in grief but also in celebrating his extraordinary life and legacy.
A visitation will be held at McAdam’s Funeral Home, located at 160 York St., Fredericton, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from 2-4 p.m. and again from 6-8 p.m. A heartfelt “Celebration of Life” service will be held at Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Kevin Culberson. In honor of Rick’s vibrant personality, attendees are encouraged to wear bright colors, symbolizing his lively spirit.
